Project Legal Advisor - Mae Sot

About the role

Asylum Access Thailand's Legal Services Team supports refugees in Bangkok and Mae Sot, and the Project Legal Advisor implements the Mae Sot legal protection project under the guidance of the Legal Services Coordinator. The project aims to strengthen legal protection for Burmese refugees through legal empowerment and self-protection, building paralegal capacity and providing direct legal assistance and case management. It is a full-time, fixed-term contract up to June 2027, based in the Mae Sot office, 40 hours a week, with occasional travel to Bangkok and other provinces.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the Mae Sot paralegal project: assess training needs, develop curriculum and materials, plan and run paralegal trainings, and coordinate legal clinic schedules with paralegals
• Supervise the Project Case Worker
• Evaluate community presentations, maintain program documentation, monitor training quality, collect data and report regularly to donors
• Provide legal support and case management for clients facing protection concerns under Thai law, including identifying cases for UNHCR consideration and keeping detailed case records
• Keep up to date on relevant guidelines, procedures and the political and social situation in the country of origin
• Support policy advocacy on issues affecting new refugees, build relationships with staff, partners and refugee communities, and carry out other assigned work

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience or knowledge of the refugee context internationally and in Thailand
• Fluent spoken and written English and Thai (essential)
• Strong analytical, writing and communication skills, initiative and attention to detail
• Preferred: law degree or equivalent, at least 2 years of workshop organization and legal case management, strong knowledge of SGBV case management, and experience with human rights and refugee issues

What we offer

• Monthly salary of THB 30,000
