AI Automation and NLP Engineering Intern

About the role

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific is looking for a full‑time AI Automation and NLP Engineering Intern to support an internal automation platform that converts United Nations meeting media into structured, verified reporting using local large‑language‑model inference. The internship lasts 4‑6 months, is unpaid, and can be performed remotely or on‑site in Bangkok.

Key responsibilities

• Author and extend automated tests (unit and mocked‑LLM) to increase coverage across priority modules (≈30%).
• Design and run structured model and prompt evaluations, including building labelled gold sets for machine‑translation and speech‑recognition error detection (≈25%).
• Develop deterministic extraction tooling such as pattern matching, catalog matching and fuzzy‑match resolvers (≈25%).
• Scaffold new modules, improve documentation, refactor code and enhance developer tooling within the established architecture (≈20%).

Required profile

• Enrolled in or having completed a graduate programme (or final year of a bachelor’s) in computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational linguistics, software engineering or a related field.
• Eligibility for the United Nations Internship Programme.

Required skills

• Strong Python proficiency.
• Experience with testing frameworks such as pytest.
• Familiarity with version control systems, particularly git.
