Ghost Gear Project Manager

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Consultant to provide day‑to‑day technical and operational direction for the Ghost Gear Project, supporting the implementation of the “Advancing Sustainable Management and Recycling of Abandoned, Lost or Otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear” initiative in Indonesia and Viet Nam.

Key responsibilities

• Lead project management activities and ensure timely delivery of project outputs.
• Provide technical and operational guidance to UNEP staff and partners.
• Coordinate with the COBSEA Coordinator on financial, administrative, procurement and contractual matters.
• Support the development of policy and institutional frameworks for fishing gear management.
• Oversee the establishment of infrastructure for collection, storage, pre‑treatment and recycling of abandoned fishing gear.
• Facilitate capacity development, stakeholder cooperation and knowledge‑sharing across the region.

Required profile

• Proven experience in managing environmental or marine‑litter projects.
• Familiarity with fishing gear recycling, marine plastic pollution mitigation and sustainable coastal livelihoods.
• Ability to work with intergovernmental bodies and international partners.
• Strong coordination and communication skills.
