Technical Advisor REDD+ and Forests

About the role

UNEP is seeking a Technical Advisor on REDD+ and Forests to support its Nature & Market‑Based Solutions Section in the Asia‑Pacific region. Based in Bangkok, the consultant will work closely with the UN‑REDD programme to enhance the delivery of Social Forestry and the SAFE (Sustaining an Abundance of Forest Ecosystems) initiatives across multiple countries.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical support and strategic guidance for UN‑REDD activities in Cambodia, Laos, Bhutan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam and the wider Asia‑Pacific region.
• Oversee implementation of Social Forestry (2026‑2030) and SAFE (2023‑2030) initiatives, ensuring alignment with country work plans and UN‑REDD outcomes.
• Coordinate with government agencies, forest enterprises, development partners and private‑sector stakeholders to promote policy uptake, financial scalability and quality assurance.
• Identify new partnership and financing opportunities to scale climate‑action and nature‑based solutions.
• Prepare and enhance reporting, knowledge‑sharing products and strategic inputs on forest finance and investment.
• Travel to project countries as required and report to the Asia‑Pacific Team Lead, UN‑REDD Coordinator and Programme Management Officer in Geneva.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in forestry, environmental science, climate policy or a related field.
• Extensive experience working on REDD+, social forestry or large‑scale forest restoration projects in the Asia‑Pacific.
• Proven ability to engage with governments, multilateral donors and private‑sector partners.
• Strong analytical and strategic planning skills with a focus on results‑oriented implementation.

Required skills

• Knowledge of REDD+ mechanisms, forest finance and nature‑based solutions.
• Familiarity with UN‑REDD programme frameworks and outcomes.
• Experience in project coordination, monitoring and evaluation.
