Asia Pacific REDD+ Safeguards Expert

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking an experienced REDD+ Safeguards Expert to provide technical assistance across six Asia‑Pacific countries. Based in Bangkok, the consultant will support national REDD+ programmes, strengthen safeguards information systems and contribute to the UN‑REDD portfolio.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver technical advice on social and environmental safeguards in line with Cancun REDD+ safeguards and the ART‑TREES standard.
• Coordinate with UNEP‑WCMC, UN‑REDD partners and national counterparts to plan and implement safeguards activities.
• Organise and participate in country missions, liaising with government officials, safeguards experts and international partners.
• Draft, review and improve technical documents such as ART‑TREES TRD/TMR, VVB findings, benefit‑sharing plans, FPIC and stakeholder engagement plans.
• Support the development and strengthening of national Safeguards Information Systems (SIS) and national safeguards guidelines.
• Design and deliver capacity‑building workshops on ART‑TREES 3.0 safeguards requirements.

Required profile

• Advanced knowledge of REDD+ safeguards, including the Cancun outcomes and ART‑TREES framework.
• Proven experience working with UN‑REDD programmes or similar climate finance initiatives.
• Strong track record of providing technical assistance and capacity‑building in multiple countries.
• Excellent communication skills for interaction with government, NGOs and international stakeholders.
